One thing to note is that this school doesn’t offer a degree, which focuses solely on game design. Instead, they offer many concentrations that other schools supplement with only a few classes. For example, graphic design, illustration, interaction design, animation, and writing are all highly specialized areas, which are necessary for most game design scenarios. Woodbury University is a private, nonprofit university in Burbank and with a satellite campus in San Diego. The school was established in 1884 and has grown to offer many graduate degree programs across their Architecture, Business, Transdisciplinarity, and Media, Culture & Design schools. Online art courses have also been available since 2002 along with on-campus degree programs in nearly 30 fields of study.

Founded in 1978, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) began in a renovated armory, serving as the first classroom and administration building. Since then, the school has grown into a multi-campus art college with locations in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia, Hong Kong, and Lacoste, France. The school, which serves more than 15,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries, offers 40+ majors and over 75 minors—more degree programs and specializations than any other art and design college. UCF also offers an MA in Digital Media - Visual Language and Interactive Media through the Nicholson School of Communication & Media.

The School of Digital Media at SCAD provides opportunities for game design students to gain hands-on experience through internships with local and national studios. Students will also work individually and in teams to complete projects in state-of-the art facilities such as the labs and SCAD Digital Media Center. And each quarter, students have the opportunity to interview and present their portfolios to professionals in the industry. Popular options for game designers include the BFA in Art/Game Design Minor, BS in Computer Science (CS)/Game Design Minor, the Bachelor of Computer Science and Arts (BCSA)/Game Design Minor, and the BS in Music and Technology/Game Design Minor.

University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) has several options for students seeking a computer science-based game design program. Cornell University is a private research university founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White. The school opened in 1868 Morrill Hall—the first building constructed on the campus—Morrill Hall.
Rochester Institute of Technology
This college for gaming focuses on the technical aspects of game development while students learn game development – and they often work in teams on projects of their own. Unlike most other gaming schools, Champlain College allows students to leave the liberal art classes for later and start taking courses in their field. This allows student to quickly begin learning about every aspect of development, including level design, narrative design, and more. What’s also nice is that NYU offers financial assistance programs to students, and connects them to potential internships and jobs all throughout their studies.
Washington University in St. Louis
This is the world’s first and only game design and development program accredited under the Computer Science curriculum by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. Graduates of the Entertainment Design program at ArtCenter College of Design are prepared to pursue positions in video game design, animated television, visual effects, live action films, television, theme parks, and toy design. Program alumni have been hired at major studios such as Activision Blizzard, Marvel, Paramount, and Netflix. The New School’s Parsons School of Design (Parsons) is home to the School of Art, Media, and Technology (AMT). Within the AMT is a Design and Technology (DT) program with BFA and MFA options.
Researchers at the Center for Game Science use gaming to solve grand challenges, crowdsource human problem-solving to aid scientific discovery, and improve student interest and achievement in mathematics. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s (RPI) School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS), houses the Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences’ (GSAS) Department and the Department of Art. The BS offers an Emphasis in EAE and it is administered by the School of Computing. Final games are eligible to be presented at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California; Industry Night at Columbia College Chicago; South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas; and the Chicago Toy and Game Fair. University of Wisconsin – Stout is accredited the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The Graphic Design and Interactive Media program is accredited by the National Association for Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

Students will create works in state-of-the-art facilities equipped with the latest software used by AAA and indie studios. Game Art facilities feature Houdini, Unreal Engine, Zbrush, Maya, and Adobe Substance Suite, among others. The Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) at University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine or UCI) is home to the Department of Informatics. Options include the Game Design and Interactive Media (GDIM) BS; and the Computer Science BS, MS, and PhD programs. All BA students will have opportunities to work on real-world projects with partners such as Electronic Arts (EA), Blizzard Entertainment, Rockstar Games, Ubisoft, Insomniac Games, and Bungie.
Program alumni have been hired at companies and studios such as Epic Games, Leo Burnett Worldwide, Fast Radius, iiRcade, and Speegs Media. Students in all EAE Programs at University of Utah will work through every level of game creation. Depending on the program, EAE graduates will be prepared to pursue positions in Game Art, Game Design and Development, Game Engineering, Simulation, Business (Games), and Visualization, among others.
The Department of Computer Science (CS) at the University of North Carolina—Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) has several options for individuals seeking a CS-based game design program. Housed in the College of Computing and Informatics, programs include a BS in CS, AI, Robotics, and Gaming, an MS in CS with an optional AI, Robotics, and Gaming Concentration, and Game Design and Development (GDD) Certificates at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Coursework for the certificate programs may be used towards the BS or MS in CS programs.
The Track requires 12 studio elective credits and six credits of interdisciplinary electives, allowing plenty of opportunities to create a focus in games. A Design Research and Development (DRD) Track, also within OSU’s Department of Design MFA Program, is a collaborative, interdisciplinary program that encourages study across departments, research areas, and themes. In the OSU College of Engineering, options include BS, MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science (CS).
